Denair High School Families,
Welcome returning and new Coyote families.  My name is Kara Backman and this will be my 20th year in the education field, working as a teacher, administrator and education consultant.  This will be my fourth year as the Principal at Denair High School and Director of Secondary Education for the district.  My husband, James, and I have three amazing children, Kade, Kash and Jacee.  Kade and Kash will be returning to DECA in the dual immersion program in second and third grade.  Jacee will be returning to Turlock Christian in the TK class eagerly awaiting her Kindergarten year at DECA.  My family is deeply rooted in the Denair community where our business is located.  I am passionate about youth first, giving back to our community and purposefully growing your mindset through life-altering relationships.
As we build our year together, we will focus on five purposes:
  • ●Building additional Career and Technical Education Pathways for all students
  • ●Deepening knowledge around AVID instructional strategies with a focus on Rigor and Relevance
  • ●Project Based Learning
  • ●Project Life curriculum deeply rooted in employment for all
  • ●English Language Development program strategies
First and foremost, 99% of our high school staff is returning!!!!  We have hired a new science teacher to replace our beloved Coach Pesek as he pursues his family dream of living next to his parents in Austin, Texas.  We are also adding a teacher and support staff as we launch our Project Life program focusing on students with disabilities in the 9th-12th grade and 18-22 year old transition students.
We have spent relentless hours creating a cohesive 6-12 program that will offer a variety of programs for our youngsters.  Simultaneously, we are growing our Career Technical Education pathways allowing students to be vocationally certified when they graduate from high school.  The variety of pathways will include visual and performing arts, information and communication technology, hospitality recreation and tourism, and health science.  Students are offered more AP and Pre-AP courses.  We will continue to increase our teacher and staff effectiveness through coaching and feedback while not sacrificing high quality education.
Over the next few months we are hosting athletic camps and a Drone Camp.  All of these camps will be the gateway to successful athletic and computer programming pathways! We have been relentless about creating a culture of learning for our students by hiring highly qualified teachers, some of whom will serve as coaches for our current sports teams.  We will also be focusing on growing our Visual and Performing Arts program as with additional opportunities such as choir, marching band and possibly colorguard.
We are excited to see all of you at Coyote Call on July 31 from 8:00-1:00.  If you are a freshman don’t miss out on freshman orientation, July 31 from 6:30-7:30.  Meet in the theater.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity of partnership.  I am excited about the year ahead of us.
